November 2, 2023

A 31-year-old man from Swindon has been banned from driving and sentenced for his reckless actions, which resulted in a high-speed car crash into a shop front on Cricklade Road. The incident occurred during a police pursuit, causing substantial damage to the Michael’s Workwear store and emphasizing the importance of responsible driving and road safety.

The incident unfolded on Cricklade Road when police officers in an unmarked car noticed the man, identified as Liam Wells, driving without lights on Pinehurst Road, Swindon. After the officers activated their blue lights and siren, Wells failed to stop, initiating a dangerous police pursuit. Wells sped away towards Cricklade Road, reaching speeds of 78mph in a 30mph zone. Tragically, the high-speed chase ended with Wells losing control of his vehicle and colliding with the front of Michael’s Workwear store, causing approximately £100,000 worth of damage.

On Monday, October 30, 2023, Liam Wells faced sentencing at Swindon Crown Court for his actions. The court heard that Wells pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including dangerous driving, drug driving, driving without insurance, and driving without a valid license. During his hearing, Wells expressed remorse for his actions and personally apologized to the owner of Michael’s Workwear, recognizing the damage he had caused.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the grave dangers associated with reckless driving and the vital importance of road safety. Irresponsible actions on the road not only put the driver at risk but also endanger the lives of pedestrians and other road users. It is hoped that this incident will underscore the significance of adhering to traffic rules, promoting responsible driving, and reducing the likelihood of such tragic events in the future.
