In a case that has raised serious concerns about national security, US Army intelligence analyst Sgt Korbein Schultz has pleaded guilty to charges of conspiring to sell military secrets to China. The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Schultz’s guilty plea after an investigation led by the FBI and US Army Counterintelligence Command uncovered his involvement in this grave breach of trust.

Schultz, who held a security clearance granting him access to top-secret information, began conspiring to sell classified military data in June 2022. The conspiracy continued until his arrest in March 2024. Over this period, Schultz allegedly received $42,000 (£33,000) in exchange for dozens of sensitive security records. These records contained critical information related to missile defense systems, mobile artillery, US fighter aircraft, and the US military’s defense strategy for Taiwan.

Schultz’s co-conspirator was believed to be a resident of Hong Kong, who specifically requested the sensitive data. The individual sought detailed information that could potentially compromise the United States’ military readiness and strategic planning. Schultz’s actions, by transmitting national defense information to a foreign entity, posed a significant threat to US national security.

Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen emphasized the gravity of Schultz’s actions, noting that his betrayal had jeopardized national security and undermined the trust placed in him as a military intelligence analyst.

Schultz has pleaded guilty to all charges, including conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defense information and bribery of a public official. In his communication with the supposed Hong Kong resident, Schultz expressed a desire to emulate the fictional spy character Jason Bourne, revealing his aspirations of becoming a secret agent.

The investigation into this case is ongoing, with the FBI and US Army Counterintelligence Command continuing their efforts to uncover any additional breaches or co-conspirators. Schultz is scheduled to be sentenced in January 2024, where he could face significant prison time for his actions.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding sensitive information and maintaining the integrity of those entrusted with national security responsibilities. As the military community and the public grapple with the implications of this breach, the case of Sgt Korbein Schultz highlights the critical need for vigilance and trust within the ranks of those who serve.
