In a tragic incident that has shocked the community, 53-year-old David Daintree from Accrington, Lancashire, has lost his life after being attacked by his own XL Bully dog. This heartbreaking event underscores the dangers associated with certain dog breeds and the critical need for responsible pet ownership.
On Tuesday evening, emergency services were alerted to a distressing situation at a residence on Ashley Court. Ambulance crews, responding to a report of a dog attack, notified the police upon discovering the severity of the situation inside the home. When officers arrived, they found David Daintree deceased, with the XL Bully dog—an imposing breed known for its muscular build—posing a significant threat of further harm.
Lancashire Police were faced with a harrowing decision. To prevent additional injury and ensure the safety of everyone at the scene, officers had no choice but to discharge a firearm, which resulted in the destruction of the aggressive XL Bully dog. The decision to use lethal force was made after attempts to control the situation failed. Specially trained officers are now providing support to David Daintree’s family during this profoundly difficult time.
XL Bully dogs, the largest variety within the American Bully breed, have sparked considerable debate. Originally bred for fighting due to their powerful physique, XL Bullies are controversial for their potential risk to safety. In December, the UK government introduced a ban on owning XL Bully dogs without an exemption certificate, citing concerns about their aggressive tendencies and public safety.
