Howard, a 12-year-old student from Twickenham, faced a daunting challenge when he began intensive chemotherapy for a rare arm cancer. His school attendance plummeted to less than half, jeopardizing both his education and well-being.

However, a groundbreaking solution changed Howard’s educational journey dramatically. Introduced to an interactive avatar and audio-visual robot dubbed ‘AV Howard,’ he gained the ability to attend classes remotely from home or the hospital. Equipped with a camera, AV Howard enabled Howard to read books, complete worksheets, and interact with his classmates through a built-in speaker.

Teachers and peers underwent special “robot training” to seamlessly integrate AV Howard into classroom activities. The impact was profound: despite battling the pain and difficulties of cancer, Howard expressed profound gratitude for staying connected with his school community.

Martin O’Sullivan, the Headteacher, underscored the critical role of such technology in ensuring continuity of education for students undergoing medical treatments. Beyond academic support, it significantly bolstered Howard’s mental well-being during a challenging period.

Provided by the Chartwell Children’s Cancer Trust through the charity Momentum, the robot has not only eased Howard’s educational journey but has also been a lifeline for his family. Momentum aims to expand this innovative solution to benefit more children facing similar circumstances in the future.
