Asif Merchant, a 46-year-old Pakistani national, has been apprehended by federal authorities for allegedly planning to assassinate U.S. political leaders. The Justice Department revealed that Merchant, who arrived in the U.S. from Pakistan in April, had been orchestrating a murder-for-hire plot since his arrival.
Merchant, also known as Asif Raza Merchant, reportedly reached out to an individual to help execute his assassination plan. Unknown to him, this person was working as a confidential source for law enforcement. During their interactions, Merchant made a gesture mimicking a gun and discussed arranging meetings with potential hitmen.
In subsequent undercover meetings, Merchant engaged with officers posing as co-conspirators. He discussed various methods for the proposed attacks and planned to coordinate the operations from abroad using coded language. Merchant also sought to acquire sensitive documents and orchestrate protests as distractions to obscure the planned murders.
Merchant allegedly provided $5,000 to the undercover officers as an advance payment for his scheme. He had scheduled his departure from the U.S. for July 12 but was arrested by the FBI on that date.FBI Director Christopher Wray condemned the plot, describing it as a serious threat to national security. “This dangerous murder-for-hire plot exposed in today’s complaint was allegedly orchestrated by a Pakistani national with close ties to Iran and reflects typical Iranian tactics,” Wray stated. He assured that any foreign-directed plot against U.S. officials or citizens would be met with the full resources and resolve of the FBI.
The arrest of Asif Merchant underscores the persistent threats faced by political leaders and the critical need for vigilant and proactive law enforcement. The FBI’s successful intervention has thwarted a potentially catastrophic event, safeguarding U.S. officials and the public.
