A 22-year-old man from Romford, east London, has been sentenced to five years in prison for his involvement in disseminating terrorist publications and encouraging terrorism. Hamza Alam, who initially claimed to be an “online librarian,” was found to be spreading propaganda glorifying the violence of ISIS across the web.
Counter-terrorism detectives had been monitoring an online messaging channel when they arrested Alam in June 2022. Despite his initial denial, further investigation revealed that he was an administrator on a Telegram channel, using the codename ‘H.’ He had shared terrorist publications that encouraged Jihad and celebrated ISIS fighters.
Alam was charged with three counts of disseminating terrorist publications and one count of encouraging terrorism. His social media channels contained content that glorified extremist violence, including posts celebrating the 9/11 bombers. Detectives worked diligently to build a case against him, emphasizing the tangible and dangerous impact such content can have, especially on the radicalization of young people.
Detective Chief Superintendent Gareth Rees, Head of Operations for the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, stated, “By sharing violent and extreme terrorist publications, he is now a terrorist offender and has been sentenced accordingly.” The case underscores the commitment of law enforcement to bring individuals like Alam to justice.
This case highlights the serious consequences of spreading extremist propaganda and the vital role of law enforcement in combating online radicalization. The efforts of counter-terrorism officers have once again demonstrated the importance of vigilance and swift action in preventing the spread of extremist ideologies.
The sentencing of Hamza Alam serves as a stark reminder that promoting violence and terrorism will not be tolerated. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities to help prevent the dissemination of harmful content and ensure the safety of the community.
