A devastating high-rise fire broke out in Dagenham, East London, early Monday morning, prompting one of the largest firefighting responses in recent years. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called to the scene at 02:44 BST, deploying over 225 firefighters and 40 fire engines to tackle the intense blaze that engulfed a residential and commercial block on Freshwater Road.

The Dagenham high-rise fire quickly escalated into a major incident as flames spread across the building’s scaffolding, ground floor, and roof. The structure was undergoing critical repairs to remove unsafe cladding, a factor that may have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. Residents were urged to stay indoors and keep their windows and doors closed as thick smoke billowed across the area, creating hazardous conditions.

In a swift response, over 100 residents were evacuated from the high-rise building as the fire raged on. Emergency services rushed two individuals to the hospital, while several others received on-site treatment for smoke inhalation and minor injuries. The London Fire Brigade deployed drones and turntable ladders to conduct a thorough search and rescue operation, ensuring no one was left trapped inside the burning building.

A rest center was quickly set up at Beacontree Health and Leisure Centre, offering immediate relief and support to those displaced by the fire. The center provided shelter, food, and medical assistance to the evacuated residents, many of whom had fled with only the clothes on their backs.

Station Commander Alan Bendell, who led the firefighting efforts, described the operation as “incredibly complex” due to the building’s height and the intensity of the fire. “Our firefighters faced significant challenges, but their quick and coordinated efforts were crucial in containing the blaze and saving lives,” Bendell remarked.

London Fire Commissioner Andy Roe praised the LFB’s rapid and strategic response, highlighting the importance of the full simultaneous evacuation that was carried out. “The bravery and professionalism of our teams were on full display today. Their actions prevented what could have been an even greater tragedy,” Roe stated.

The Dagenham fire has had a profound impact on the local community. Roads surrounding the area have been closed, and authorities continue to advise residents to avoid the vicinity while investigations are ongoing. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and the London Fire Brigade is expected to release more details in the coming days.

This incident has reignited concerns about fire safety in high-rise buildings, particularly those with known fire risks like unsafe cladding. The community has rallied together, with many expressing deep gratitude for the tireless efforts of the firefighters who risked their lives to protect others.
