Massive Attack on French Rail Network Brings Travel Chaos Ahead of Olympic Opening Ceremony

By THe Nexus Gazette

Hours before the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics on Friday, part of France’s high-speed rail network was paralyzed by a “massive attack” that disrupted service for hundreds of thousands of passengers. Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete described the attacks as “coordinated” and targeted several transport lines on Thursday night.

France’s national rail network, SNCF, reported a series of “coordinated” arson attacks that damaged facilities and services. Fiber optic cables at three locations were set on fire, impacting signal boxes and other rail infrastructure.

Disruptions: At least 250,000 passengers were affected on Friday, with 800,000 expected to be impacted over the weekend. Numerous services had to be canceled, prompting SNCF to advise affected passengers to postpone travel plans and avoid stations.

French authorities opened an investigation, considering charges related to damage to property that could carry up to 15 years’ imprisonment and a fine.

Despite the attacks, Olympic organizers confirmed that the opening ceremony would proceed as planned.

Prime Minister Gabriel Attal mobilized intelligence services and law enforcement agencies to track down suspects. SNCF chairman Jean-Pierre Farandou emphasized that the intention behind the attacks was to cause massive disruption to the rail network.

Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete stated that the disruptions appeared intentional but remained unclear about responsibility.

One passenger, Maëliss Davy, had her train from Paris to Nantes delayed due to an “act of vandalism.” Her train was later canceled, highlighting the impact on travelers.

Despite the challenges, the Paris Olympics will proceed, demonstrating resilience in the face of adversity.
