In an extraordinary act of quick thinking and medical expertise, two members of Team GB’s medical team saved the life of Tulkin Kilichev, the head coach of the Uzbekistan Olympic boxing team, during the Paris 2024 Olympics. The dramatic incident unfolded on August 8, 2024, at Roland Garros, where celebrations for Uzbek boxer Hasanboy Dusmatov’s gold medal victory took a terrifying turn.
Kilichev, who was in the warm-up area, suddenly collapsed after suffering a cardiac arrest. The situation rapidly became critical, but fortunately, Team GB physiotherapist Robbie Lillis and doctor Harj Singh were nearby. Responding to urgent cries for help, they rushed to Kilichev’s side, equipped with their emergency trauma bag.
With no time to lose, Lillis and Singh immediately began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and deployed a defibrillator to deliver a shock to Kilichev’s heart. Despite the initial lack of response, their determination paid off after approximately 20 to 30 seconds when Kilichev miraculously regained consciousness, much to the relief of everyone present.
Shortly after Kilichev was stabilized, the venue’s medical team arrived and swiftly transported him to a local hospital. He is now reported to be in stable condition, thanks to the prompt and expert intervention by the Team GB medics. This life-saving act has been hailed as a powerful reminder of the critical importance of having trained medical personnel and appropriate equipment readily available during high-stakes events like the Olympics.
Reflecting on the incident, Robbie Lillis expressed deep gratitude for the training and resources that enabled him and Dr. Singh to respond so effectively. He described the experience as an unforgettable “Olympic moment,” one that underscores the vital role of medical professionals in the world of sports.
Kilichev’s recovery is ongoing, with the entire sports community expressing hopes for his full and speedy recovery. The event has resonated deeply across the global sports community, showcasing the unity and support that transcend national boundaries in times of need.
This heartwarming story of heroism not only highlights the exceptional skill of Team GB’s medical staff but also serves as a testament to the life-saving impact of prompt medical intervention. The dedication of those who provide such care is invaluable, particularly in environments where the stakes are as high as they are at the Olympic Games.
