In a shocking incident that has rocked the Scottish First Aid community, a police officer celebrated for his bravery has been found guilty of sexually assaulting four women during a high-profile awards ceremony. The event, held at Glasgow’s Radisson Blu hotel, was intended to honor heroism, but instead, it revealed a disturbing breach of trust.

Constable David Jones, a police officer with over six-and-a-half years of service, was awarded the Chairperson’s Award for bravery during the Scottish First Aid awards in March 2023. However, the night took a dark turn when Jones used the occasion to prey on four unsuspecting women, leaving them traumatized and the community outraged.

  • Firefighter’s Sexual Assault: A 30-year-old female firefighter recounted the horrifying moment when Jones approached her on the dance floor. She initially felt a bump on her back, only to realize that Jones had grabbed her buttocks without consent, leaving her in a state of shock and anger.
  • Swimming Instructor’s Harassment: A 23-year-old swimming instructor described an “uncomfortable interaction” where Jones groped her breast. Despite her firm warning to stay away, Jones persisted, displaying a blatant disregard for her boundaries.
  • Paramedic Student’s Assault and Trauma: A 23-year-old paramedic student detailed her harrowing experience with Jones, who repeatedly attempted to dance with her. After she refused, Jones escalated the situation by grabbing her hand and slipping his hand under her dress. This incident led to the student suffering from PTSD, highlighting the severe emotional toll of the assault.
  • Sister’s Intimidation: The swimming instructor’s sister also fell victim to Jones’ inappropriate behavior. While she avoided physical assault, she described feeling deeply uncomfortable and intimidated by his presence throughout the evening.

Following the courageous testimonies of the victims, David Jones was found guilty of multiple counts of sexual assault. The court handed down the following penalties:

  • 150 Hours of Community Service: Jones was sentenced to perform 150 hours of unpaid community work, a punishment that reflects the gravity of his actions.
  • Sex Offenders Register: Jones has been placed on the sex offenders register for one year, ensuring that his criminal record reflects the seriousness of his offenses.

Sheriff Andrew McIntyre, who oversaw the case, condemned Jones’ actions, stating, “None of [your heroic acts] takes away from the obvious distress your conduct caused.” This verdict sends a clear message about the consequences of abusing power and trust, especially in roles meant to protect and serve the public.

This shocking incident at the bravery awards ceremony has underscored the importance of holding public servants accountable for their actions. As the victims seek justice, the community must also reckon with the betrayal of trust by an individual who was supposed to exemplify courage and integrity.
