Thailand has marked a historic milestone with the appointment of Paetongtarn Shinawatra as its youngest-ever prime minister at the age of 37. This momentous event highlights not only her personal achievements but also the enduring influence of the Shinawatra family in Thai politics.
Paetongtarn Shinawatra is the youngest daughter of Thaksin Shinawatra, who served as Thailand’s prime minister from 2001 to 2006. Her political lineage extends to her aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra, who was prime minister from 2011 to 2014. The Shinawatra family has been a dominant force in Thai politics, with their party, Pheu Thai, frequently leading in elections.
Paetongtarn completed her education at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, a prestigious institution known for its conservative values. Prior to her political career, she played a significant role in managing the hotel division of her family’s business empire.
Her political ascent began in 2021 when she was appointed chief of the Pheu Thai party’s Inclusion and Innovation Advisory Committee. Despite the personal challenge of giving birth to her second child just weeks before the 2023 elections, Paetongtarn emerged as a leading candidate, capturing the public’s favor.
Paetongtarn’s appointment followed the controversial removal of former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin by the Constitutional Court. The court’s decision was prompted by ethical concerns over Srettha’s appointment of a lawyer with controversial ties. This marks the fourth time in 16 years that a Thai prime minister has been unseated by the Constitutional Court.
As Paetongtarn Shinawatra assumes office, Thailand anticipates a new direction under her leadership. Her ascension signifies both a continuation of the Shinawatra legacy and a potential shift in the nation’s political landscape.
