The long-anticipated plans for a new London Overground station in south-east London have been revived, bringing renewed optimism to the local community. The proposed station, set to be located adjacent to Millwall Stadium near Surrey Canal Road, is part of a broader redevelopment project that has been in the works for several years. The project, which received initial approval from Lewisham Council in 2022, has now gained fresh momentum thanks to a £17 million investment pledge from a key developer.
The ambitious development, led by The Renewal Group, is a five-phase scheme that aims to transform the South Bermondsey area by constructing approximately 3,500 homes. The Renewal Group has committed to making around 30% of these homes affordable. However, to accommodate the funding of the new station, the number of affordable units in the second phase has been reduced by 100.
The project’s first phase is expected to kick off in 2026, marking the beginning of a significant transformation of the area. The station, along with the new housing, will be central to creating a more connected and vibrant neighborhood in South Bermondsey.
In addition to the new Overground station, the project includes a host of amenities designed to enrich the local community. Planned features include an auditorium, office spaces, restaurants, cafés, a leisure center, green spaces, and a variety of shops. These additions are part of a broader effort to create a sustainable and lively community hub that will improve the quality of life for both residents and visitors.
The development is expected to not only address housing needs but also to foster economic growth and social cohesion in the area, making it an attractive place to live and work.
Transport for London (TfL) initially planned to fund the construction of the new Overground station using the government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF). However, due to budget overruns on other projects, TfL had to redirect the allocated funds. This redirection posed a significant challenge to the station’s completion, causing delays and uncertainty.
The recent £17 million commitment from The Renewal Group has been a crucial development, rekindling hopes that the station will become a reality. Despite these financial challenges, the developer’s investment signals strong support for the project and a commitment to its successful completion.
The revitalization of plans for the new London Overground station represents a significant step forward for South Bermondsey and the surrounding areas. As construction is set to begin in the coming years, the project promises to bring much-needed infrastructure improvements and community benefits to this part of London.
Local residents, stakeholders, and city planners alike are watching the developments with great interest, hopeful that the new station will serve as a catalyst for further growth and regeneration in south-east London.
