Tributes Pour In for Ryanair Pilots Killed in M62 Lorry Tragedy

In a tragic accident on the M62 motorway, Ryanair pilot Matt Greenhalgh, 28, and co-pilot Jamie Fernandes, 24, lost their lives. The fatal collision occurred while they were traveling to Liverpool John Lennon Airport in a taxi. The taxi collided with two lorries on the westbound carriageway between Junctions 8 and 7, leading to the immediate death of both pilots at the scene.

The aviation community is in mourning as news of their passing spreads. Both pilots were highly respected professionals in their field, with Matt Greenhalgh serving as a Ryanair Captain and Jamie Fernandes as a Senior First Officer. Jamie, a former pupil at Bolton School, had recently joined Ryanair after completing his pilot training, fulfilling his lifelong ambition to become a pilot.

Daniel Hayton, a Ryanair staff member, set up a GoFundMe page to support the grieving families of Matt and Jamie. The outpouring of support has been overwhelming, with the fundraiser already surpassing £30,000. Contributions have been made by friends, colleagues, and members of the public who were touched by the tragedy.

The Marple Rugby Club, where Matt Greenhalgh played rugby alongside his father, posted a heartfelt tribute to the former player. The club’s tribute emphasized Matt’s dedication both on and off the field, highlighting his passion for flying and his commitment to his community.

Bolton School also paid tribute to Jamie Fernandes, reflecting on his journey from a student with a dream to a professional pilot. His former teachers and classmates remembered him as a bright and determined individual whose ambition was realized through his hard work and dedication.

This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the risks faced by those who dedicate their lives to aviation. The sudden and unexpected loss of Matt and Jamie has left a void in the hearts of their families, friends, and colleagues.

As the investigation into the collision continues, the focus remains on supporting the families and honoring the memories of the two pilots. The aviation community and the public’s generosity demonstrate the deep respect and admiration held for Matt and Jamie.

Our thoughts are with their families during this difficult time. May their memory live on as a testament to their dedication and passion for flying.
