DHAKA, Bangladesh – Violent clashes erupted on Monday as rival student groups in Bangladesh confronted each other over the contentious government job quota system. At least 100 people were injured during the confrontations, which pitted demonstrators opposing quotas against counter-protesters loyal to the ruling party.
Quota System: The current system reserves more than half of well-paid civil service posts for specific groups, including children of heroes from the country’s 1971 liberation war from Pakistan. These “freedom fighters” are given preference in job appointments.
Protesters’ Demands: Thousands of anti-quota protesters have taken to the streets, demanding an end to this discriminatory system. They argue that government jobs should be based on merit rather than family connections.
Campus Battles: On the Dhaka University campus, hundreds of anti-quota protesters and students backing the ruling Awami League party engaged in fierce battles. Rocks were hurled, sticks were wielded, and iron rods were used in the clashes.
Injured Students: Around 100 students, including women, were injured and taken to hospitals. The situation remains tense as more people seek medical attention.
Prime Minister’s Stance: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina defended the veterans’ sacrifice but acknowledged the need for a fair system. She emphasized that regardless of political ideologies, the “freedom fighters” deserve respect.
Criticism and Emotions: Critics argue that the quota system benefits children of pro-government groups. Hasina’s recent comments further fueled tensions, leading to intensified protests.
