A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 struck off the coast of southern Japan early Thursday morning, triggering tsunami advisories for several coastal regions. The quake, which hit the southwestern islands of Kyushu and Shikoku, caused significant tremors that were felt across a broad area.
The earthquake occurred at approximately 3:59 AM local time, with its epicenter located off the coast of Kyushu. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) swiftly issued tsunami advisories for coastal areas, urging residents to avoid the shore and seek higher ground to ensure their safety.
Initial reports indicate that the earthquake caused buildings to sway and disrupted transportation services in the affected regions. Authorities are currently conducting damage assessments and have advised residents to remain alert for potential aftershocks, which could pose additional risks.
The JMA’s tsunami advisory is in effect for several coastal areas, including parts of Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures. Although no significant tsunami waves have been reported thus far, the advisory remains active as a precautionary measure to prepare for any potential developments.
In response to the earthquake, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has convened an emergency meeting to coordinate the government’s response. Kishida reassured the public that comprehensive measures are being implemented to address the situation and safeguard residents in the affected areas.
The 6.9 magnitude earthquake highlights Japan’s ongoing vulnerability to seismic activity. The prompt issuance of tsunami advisories and the government’s rapid response underscore the critical importance of preparedness and vigilance in mitigating the impact of natural disasters.
